Hampshire Contabulary | Notice of suspension of firearms grant application service

11 January 2022

Hampshire Contabulary | Notice of suspension of firearms grant application service.

We wanted to update you, as after careful consideration, the Hampshire Constabulary Chief Constable, Olivia Pinkney, has taken the decision to suspend the grant application service provided by Hampshire Constabulary’s Firearms Licensing Department for the foreseeable future.

While appreciating how disappointing this will be to our customers, this decision has been made in order to support our NHS colleagues who are participating in the Omicron Emergency Boost programme.

Please note that if you have a genuine occupational or livelihood reason for submitting a grant application, please contact us at firearms.licensing@hampshire.police.uk and we will work with you to accommodate your request.

We will continue to monitor the programme, both locally and nationally, and as soon as it is safe to resume service, we will do so.

In addition, it is also important that, as a public and emergency service, we take proportionate and sensible decisions around employee distancing to maintain our resilience levels across the organisation.

The levels of Omicron virus transmission are increasing at a significant rate and in order to minimise the risk of cross contamination, firearms licensing staff will only be conducting home and/or site visits in limited circumstances, and with the agreement of all parties.

This means that our priority will be focused on public safety and processing renewal applications to ensure that we continue to renew certificates before expiry, thereby preventing our holders from potentially being in unlawful possession of their guns.

If you have already obtained your medical information with a view to submitting a grant application, please be reassured that we will accept this when the grant portal reopens - provided the document was completed no more than 6 months prior to application and there has been no change in your medical conditions.
